Helloooooo Spring!
FROM THE DESK OF PAM CONKLIN
Novato Unified School District is sponsoring a Budget Rally to protest the budget proposed by Governor Schwarzenegger on Monday, March 24th at 3:00 at Gordon Gym on the Novato High School campus. Please plan on joining us as a united voice in objection to the devastating cuts facing all of the schools in California, and Novato specifically.
Please join us for Pleasant Valley's Open House on Thursday, April 3rd from 6:00-7:00. Students will want to take you to their classrooms and share what they are working on with you. This is their night to shine! We ask parents to stay close to their children at all times for the safety of all. You will not want to miss out on all the projects and work that they want to share with you and give you a glimpse of what they will be working on for the rest of the year! Please refrain from engaging teachers in lengthy conversations or conferences on this evening. Look forward to seeing you on the 3rd!
Also, Thursday, April 3rd is a minimum day for students to allow teachers to prepare for the evening. Dismissal for all 1st- 5th graders is 12:30. AM Kindergarten schedule remains the same; PM Kindergarten will attend 8:30 - 11:55.
The middle school Deans from Hill and Sinaola will visit our school on April 4th. The deans will present information regarding their schools academic/elective program, student activities, and the registration process. Intra-district requests will not be approved until a later date so it will be most important that students attend the presentation for their neighborhood school. This will insure that they will register at the correct school.

Parents - A Gentle Reminder that students are not to bring toys of any kind to school. This includes tech decks, pencil pals, etc. These items can be a distraction to your child and those around him/her. Please help your student remember not to have toys in their backpacks!
ANNUAL PARENT SURVEY
We are providing families with the opportunity to participate in the annual parent survey. We encourage each and every family to participate. Our goal is to meet or exceed a 40% return rate per site. The survey is anonymous. The survey window will be open from April 1, 2008 to April 25, 2008.
Results are used for district-wide and site-based decision making. The survey will be available in two formats, providing parents with options. One survey should be completed for each student in the district. Two Options for Completion:
Online:
To increase efficiency and reduce copy costs, we are piloting our online survey system this year. Starting on April 1, 2008, a link to the survey will be available on the Novato Unified School District homepage: http://www.nusd.org. Parents can simply click on the link, complete the multiple-choice questions, and hit the "submit" button. The online survey can be accessed from a home computer with internet access, or from a school site or district office computer lab.
Hard Copy:
Starting on April 1, 2008, hard copy surveys will be available at the school office for parents who prefer this format. Hard copy surveys can be completed on site or taken home for completion, and then returned to the school office.

FROM THE DESK OF PAM CONKLIN
As we approach the end of the second trimester, I thought it was a good time to remind parents and students of the importance of building good study habits that will help them now and in the future.
- Designate a special place at home to do homework. Have all necessary supplies (pens, pencils, paper, etc.) on hand.
- Use the planner every day to record the homework assignments.
- Prepare for school the night before. Gather homework, library books, lunch, etc. so you are not rushing around in the morning looking for things!
- Go to bed at a reasonable hour. Research identifies the importance of getting a good night's rest.
- Eat a healthy breakfast every day. Good nutrition is essential for good learning!
Mark your calendars for the upcoming STAR statewide standardized tests! All second through fifth grade students will participate in English Language Arts and Math tests during the weeks of April 28th - May 9th. Please avoid all doctor appointments, family trips, etc. during these two weeks. Students perform much better when they take the tests in the most familiar setting (their classroom) with their own teacher. Thank you for your cooperation!

The middle school Deans from Hill, San Jose, and Sinaloa will visit our school on April 4th. The counselors will present information regarding their schools academic/elective program, student activities, and the registration process. Intra-district requests will not be approved until a later date so it will be most important that students attend the presentation for their neighborhood school. This will insure that they will register at the correct school.
Board Policy 6152 Class Assignment provides parents an opportunity to submit a request for student placement. This year, the District Advisory has reviewed this policy and based on the Advisory and staff recommendations, a common form has been developed for all parents in the district to use to submit requests. This form is available on the NUSD website and in the school office. If your child has a specific learning need, if you have a special concern, or if you have information that you feel needs to be communicated to the school regarding your child's class placement for next year, please complete this new form by May 10th. Forms submitted after this deadline will not be accepted. Although we can not guarantee class assignments or specific teacher requests, parent information will be taken into consideration as one of the many determining factors needed to achieve a balanced classroom. All parent information shall be given equal consideration. The professional staff of the school will make the final determination for placement. We care about your child(ren), and we will proceed thoughtfully and with great seriousness to do the best job we can for every child.
Pleasant Valley is looking for a computer projector and/or a scanner. If you have an extra, PV would be happy to take these off your hands! Please contact Mike Harris, our Technology Aide, with any questions.
Reminder: The parking lot on the side of the school is reserved for staff only. Please respect our staff and do not use these spaces to drop-off or pick-up students. We only have approximately 30 spaces for close to 50 staff members. Thank you for your cooperation!
TOXICS FORUM, MARCH 13, 7:00-9:30 PM
"Toxicity in America": Join us Thursday, Mar. 13, 2008, 7:00-9:30 PM. Speaker Peter Greenlaw will be presenting this topic at the Novato Unified School District Board Room, 1015 7th St. Novato, CA. $10 registration in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 PM.
Toxicity in America is an amazing wake up call to the effect of Toxins in our World. These Toxins are in our food, water, air and everywhere in our every-day lives. There are currently over 100,000 chemicals in commercial use and less than 15% have ever been tested for what they do to us. The seminar will focus on solutions that you can incorporate into your every-day lives. This is a fundraiser for Novato Live Well Network. SCHOOL FUEL ANNOUNCEMENT:
Rally to Demonstrate Support for an Alternative Education Budget
On Thursday, March 6 at 12:30PM there will be a rally about the education budget at Lower Brookside School in San Anselmo. Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, our local Assemblyman Jared Huffman, and our Senator Carole Migden will be the speakers on the school campus. This is a rally to challenge the Governor's budget and its severe cuts for education. Senator Perrata is hoping to generate support for an alternative approach recommended by the California Legislative Analyst Office (LAO) that would result in fewer cuts to education and more stable funding in the future. For more information about the LAO alternative, you can visit their website: http://www.lao.ca.gov/laoapp/main.aspx.

FROM THE DESK OF PAM CONKLIN
Happy New Year! I hope this greeting finds you well rested from a well deserved two weeks off! We are currently accepting registration for Kindergarten for next year!!! Please let your friends and neighbors know! In order to register for school, parents must provide a birth certificate, proof of residency, and doctor verified immunization records. Pleasant Valley parent tours will continue on January 17th, February 28th, and March 13th. These offer prospective parents an opportunity to visit classrooms and learn a little more about PV. (Reservations are required so please remind your friends to call in advance!)
This is your chance! The Leadership Team has an opening! If you wonder how certain funds are spent at PV; if you want to make a difference in your child's education; we need you! If you are interested or have any questions, please call me by Friday, January 18th. I look forward to hearing from you!
It has been brought to my attention that pedestrians are crossing the street in the middle of Sutro (and walking straight up our grass area in front of school.) Thanks to the City of Novato and the Transportation Authority of Marin, we are so fortunate to have crossing guards at both crosswalks. For the safety of all, please use crosswalks when crossing Sutro Ave. Thank you for your cooperation.
Back by popular demand! Parents are invited to attend a workshop on Wednesday, January 18th at 6:30 at the Education Center to learn about Professional Learning Communities (PLC). Administrators from the Novato Unified School District will present the key components of PLC which is the district-wide focus of our staff development. PLC encourages schools, grade level teams, teachers, departments - indeed, everyone - to examine how to best meet our students needs. The workshop received much praise and many requests were made for another presentation. You will not be disappointed!

Holiday Sharing Embraced at Pleasant Valley
The spirit of the season struck the hearts of many Pleasant Valley elementary students. More than 160 families donated toys and food over the past two weeks for Novato Human Needs' annual food and toy drive. A food and toy pyramid was built in the school's multi-purpose room to display the collection and remind students of their impact on the community. The contributions were distributed to needy families throughout Novato through the Novato Human Needs.
A very special thank you goes out to the committee who dedicated many hours to making this program work so well this year - they are: Michelle Roberts, Linda Blum, Heather Sargent, Carol Lamont, Theresa Hakes. Our Novato Community thanks you very much for all your hard work and reaching out to those in need.

Holiday Share December 3rd - December 14th
FROM THE DESK OF PAM CONKLIN
We are in great need for yard supervision (paid) substitutes! Please consider giving of your time to help ensure the safety of our children. Many of you help in the classrooms already. Why not extend your time to help cover the yard, as well? And get paid to do it!! If you are interested, please call the school office as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to the safety of our students!!
Attached to this week's PV Views are the school calendars for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years. Our District is very fortunate to have many breaks and holidays throughout the year. Please consider these when planning your family vacations through the year 2010. These calendars are also posted on the NUSD website.
The winter season has officially started at PV! (A little early I know but the number of absences tells a different story!) Please review some of the helpful tips below with your child to deter the spread of germs:
- Avoid sharing food, drinks, and silverware with others.
- Wash hands throughout the day, especially before eating and after using the restroom.
- Get plenty of sleep! Children in elementary school need at least 10 hours of sleep a night.
- Eat a well-balanced nutritious diet. Eating well helps us stay healthy!

Holiday Share December 3rd - December 14th
FROM THE DESK OF PAM CONKLIN
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, a few thanks of my own: Thank you to everyone for your attendance at Parent Conferences. This is such a wonderful opportunity for both parents and teachers to get together and talk about what we love the most - your child! It is this mutual support that most benefits the learning experience for our children. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility with the unusual schedule.
Thanks to Leslie Resnick, Brenda Pfeifer, Cindy Roncaglia, Tracy Kreling, Kristi Steadman, and Natalie Mulligan for coordinating the Book Faire. PV PTA will receive over $3000 and the library an additional $400! Our kids are so lucky to benefit from such a supportive community!
Thank you to Michelle Roberts and her helpers for coordinating our Holiday Share drives. It is through their dedication and our community's generosity that PV is making a difference in the lives of some families in Novato.
Please join us on December 3rd at 3:30 in the school library for a Joint meeting of our PTA and Site Leadership Team. This is an opportunity to hear the busy work of both of these groups at one time! It is through the leadership of both of these groups that most of our activities and academic programs are made possible.
As the winter months approach and more and more of our kids may miss school due to illness, please remember to call our 24 hour Attendance Line (897-6264) to report your child' absence before 9:00 am. This helps the front office tremendously. Thank you for your cooperation!

December Holiday Share:
December 3rd -14th
Our November Holiday Share food drive was a big success. PV families donated more than 150 bags of food which were distributed to needy families throughout Novato. A special thanks to Theresa Hakes, Linda Blum, Carol Lamont, and Heather Sargent for making it happen!
December 3rd marks the beginning of our Holiday food and toy drive, and it will continue through December 14th. Once again, we are counting on the proven generosity of our PV families to help provide food, toys and books to those who are less fortunate.
On Monday, you will see the familiar blue bins lined up along the drop-off loop ready to accept your donations. So, take a moment to look through your cupboards or purchase some extra non-perishable items on your next trip to the grocery store. Additionally, unwrapped toys, books and gift cards will be collected and distributed to newborns and children up to the age of 17.
The customary grocery bags are included in your Friday folder. Attached to each, you will find a "Winter Wishes" card that your child can fill out with their own wishes or wishes that can be passed along to those who will be receiving the donations. These will be posted in the multi-purpose room throughout the month of December.
Your contributions make a BIG difference to the clients of Novato Human Needs. They go directly to local families who might not otherwise be able to celebrate the season. Thank you for your generosity.
- Monday, December 3rd - 3:30 Joint PTA/Leadership Team Meeting
A FEW OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Over the past few weeks, reports have appeared in the news media regarding students who have contracted a staph infection known as MRSA. The Marin County School Districts received a briefing from Dr. Anju Goel, Deputy Public Health Officer, Marin County Department of Health and Human Services about MRSA. Key points to prevent the spread of the staph infection include:
- Use the same precautions you would use to prevent the spread of the flu or other illnesses, especially washing hands thoroughly and frequently with soap and warm water.
- Alcohol-based hand cleaners are effective. It is important to note that the most important part of washing hands is the vigorous rubbing of the hands together to thoroughly clean the skin.

Direct Funding Contribution Forms were sent home on 11/9/07. Checks are already coming in and we want to thank our early supporters: The Scott Family, Todd Smith, Dan & Kristi Steadman, Lance & Kerri Baetkey, Natalie & Jay Mulligan, Josie & Dirk Brandis.
A parent recently requested an additional contribution form so that grandparents could also support this funding drive. Many grandparents and extended family members may be willing to support our school by making a tax-deductible contribution to our PTA. Additional contribution forms can be obtained in the school office, or by sending an e-mail to: Linda@balancingelement.com.
Our school thanks you (and your families) for your support!
Our Lost and Found bin is overflowing! Please take a moment to look through this bin located outside of the multi-use room for lost jackets, sweaters, lunchboxes, etc. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity by December 14th.

Parent Teacher Conferences, November 8th - 16th
FROM THE DESK OF PAM CONKLIN
Fairies, and princesses, and pirates - oh, my! It was wonderful to see everyone at our Halloween parade this week! It is always so impressive to see all the parental support at our special events! As I went through all the classes (and sampled many of the goodies!), I was amazed at the creative activities in which the children were engaged. I also noted a concerted effort to bring a plethora of healthy choices for our kids. Thank you for modeling for our children that apples and crackers and cheese can be fun food, too! Teachers and parents worked very hard to create a memorable experience for all!
Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled from November 8th through the 16th. For this week, the schedule for the 1st - 5th graders will be 8:30 - 12:30 pm. Please make arrangements to have your child picked up at 12:30 pm. Kindergarten students stay on their regular schedule. Students will be permitted to purchase a lunch but due to the limited time, we do suggest to parents to send a large snack with their child and have lunch at home or child care.
I am sure everyone has noticed the beautiful new school sign that now greets all who visit PV! This magnificent work of art was a true collaboration of effort between the students and staff. Students submitted various designs. They then voted on their choice and under the gifted guidance of one of our paraeducators, Sherry Clark, painted and placed the mosaic tiles into the charming design that you see! Thank you to Sherry, students, and staff for creating a sign that will welcome children and parents for years to come!
Reminder: Picture make-up day is Thursday, November 8th.
For the safety of our children, staff, and parents, please keeps all dogs off campus. Thank you for your cooperation!
PV NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Also, we could use a few more volunteers to work the 12 - 2pm shifts at the book fair. If you are interested in this fun opportunity, please contact Tracy Kreling at 897-4680.

KUDOS KORNER
With the help of all the staff and a handful of parents, Pleasant Valley recognized another Red Ribbon Week with much success! Important conversations and activities on healthy lifestyle choices happened around campus. The students seemed to enjoy the week and really caught on to the "I 'Heart' Me, So I'll Stay Healthy!" theme. A big thank you to: Kerri Baetkey, Mary Beurger, Michelle Malloy, Vicki Meblin and Cindy Roncoglia for your fabulous work on organizing and distributing all the Red Ribbon Week materials. Many thanks to the awesome Kindergarten team for displaying the super posters throughout the week and thanks so much to our wonderful teachers for your support and hard work not only during Red Ribbon Week, but throughout the year.
Kate Mansergh. RRW Coordinator
Hey P.V. Kids & Staff,
Our sign is finally up, and it looks great. I'm so proud of everybody that worked on it. You all did such a good job, and our school now has a permanent remembrance that you all had a hand in making. Additionally, I want to extend a big, "Thank You", to the workmen from the District Office that put it up.
Love and thanks to you all,
Mrs. Clark

FROM THE PTA PRESIDENT
Dear Parents, Teachers and PV Community,
Pleasant Valley Elementary PTA is in need of a financial auditor. Please contact me or any PTA board member to inquire about this volunteer position.
I'm feeling especially inspired today. I just saw the new artwork above the gate at the main entrance to Pleasant Valley School. What an inspiring piece. Very well done! If you haven't seen it yet, make a point of stopping by and looking. It lifts my spirits just to look at it.
Tim Davidson, President

Upcoming Reminders:
Dear PV parents,
Each week, we try to recognize volunteers for their efforts. Now, our challenge here is enormous in that there are so many volunteers doing so many different things all throughout the school year. It's impossible to personally list and thank everyone. So this THANK YOU goes to all those people that we just couldn't and didn't list. And if you know of someone that you feel deserves the recognition and thanks, please let us know.
Speaking of thanks, we thank Maureen Malliaras for coordinating the fundraiser at Mary's Pizza. And thanks to Kate Mansergh (and all those that helped her) for coordinating a successful Red Ribbon Week. Thanks also to Val Scheiner for taking the lead on the Note Card Fundraiser.
Each week, we also try to keep you posted on upcoming events:
- Scholastic Book Fair: November 9-16
- Thanksgiving Food Drive : November 12-16
- Reflections: entry deadlines November 29
- December Food & Toy Drive : December 3 - 14
- Holiday Concert: December 20
Tuesday, November 13th is PV Dine and Donate Night at California Grill!!!
That is parent/teacher conference week so no need to worry about going home after conferences and having to cook dinner! You can go for lunch or dinner - dine-in or take-out! California Grill has a wonderful menu selection and something for everyone! Visit their website and check out their menu www.califgrill.com! No flyer is needed for that evening - just mention Pleasant Valley! Tell your neighbors, friends, family! You all did such a great job for Mary's - let's do it again.
We will not be having a Dine and Donate evening in December - so let's make this one a big one!!!
Thanks again everyone for your continued support! See you at the Grill!!!!
Health wise Ideas, aka Healthy Hub
Are you running out of lunch ideas for your kids? Are your kids tired of the same sandwich every day? Let's share our ideas and make it more fun (and healthy) for everyone! Please email or tell me your creative ideas and I'll try to put a few in the PV Views each week (joann.brandis@verizon.net). Here goes:
How many ways to make a sandwich? All these options are available in a whole grain form:
- bagel or mini bagel
- tortillas: roll it up or fold like a burrito
- healthy crackers (TJ's has some great options: Ok Mok, TJs savory thins, the list goes on)
- pita bread (with hummus)
- hamburger buns (sounds crazy but they are super soft and they are different from plain sliced bread)
- (brown) rice cakes (use cream cheese, raisins and shredded carrots, or variations of peanut butter and other dried fruits)
- sliced bread, but cutting sliced bread differently, like in strips or tiny squares
Thanks and happy lunch-making!
Josie Brandis

Halloween Parade - Wednesday, October 31, 2007 - 8:45
FROM THE DESK OF PAM CONKLIN
As many of you are aware, some of the children who attend Pleasant Valley have food allergies; the reaction to these allergies range from minor to severe. Certain foods can trigger a serious reaction. Several parents have asked for a list of these foods so that they can bring in baked goods and treats that are safe for the entire class. In order to make this as easy for you as possible, below is a list of ingredients that may cause an allergic reaction:
- Nuts of any kind
- Seeds of any kind (sesame, poppy, caraway, etc.)
- Mustard
- Beans and peas
- Strawberries (artificial flavor is OK)
- Items with labels that say "May contain nuts or seeds"
Items are generally safe if the label reads "Made in a factory that processes nuts or seeds"; "Made on shared equipment with nuts and seeds"; or "Contains soy." Most store bought and homemade vanilla and chocolate cupcakes are safe.
There will always be an alternative treat available for the child with allergies in case you bring in something containing an ingredient s/he cannot eat. If there is any doubt, the alternative treat will be given.
We hope that this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
PV NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Escrip Campaign/Competition - Due 11/02/07
Don't forget to sign up for Escrip and other community grocery card programs. The deadline of 11/02/07 for the sign ups and the competition is fast approaching.
Only 15 families have submitted competition forms. Parents show your PV Eagle spirit and complete all necessary forms. Extra forms are available in the school office or on the website; nusd.org/pleasant.
Please take the 2 minutes to complete this very special homework assignment! Remember your extra efforts help support PV's much needed Academic Coaching program.
PV's Holiday Concert date has changed...
Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 20 @ 7 pm at Sinaloa. There was a scheduling conflict at Sinaloa so they needed us to change the date.
Rehearsals will begin Monday, November 5 in the multi-use room right after school for 2nd-5th graders. In the past, we have had the wonderful opportunity of having the concert videotaped and then burned onto DVD's for the students at a cost. That wonderful parent moved on last year. So, if there is any parent that does this as a profession and would be willing to volunteer their services the evening of the Holiday Concert that would be wonderful. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Deb White @ 299-9836.
Please avoid playing on the upper play yard on the primary playground after school. This area is reserved for our child care provider and having other children in the area may be disruptive. For the safety of all students, thank you for your cooperation.
Many people have asked where to send contributions to support the Magana family. A trust fund for the Magana family has been established by Frank Howard Allen Realtors at the Bank of Marin, 1450 Grant Ave., Novato 94945. Donations can also be made at any Bank of Marin branch; checks should be made out to the Magana Family Fund.
DINE & DONATE - HUGE, HUGE, HUGE SUCCESS!!
Thank you Pleasant Valley Families - Mary's Pizza Night was a SMASHING SUCCESS!!! People were waiting, phones were ringing, and pizzas were being delivered all over Novato!!! Because of all your efforts and families getting together to have dinner - we generated $3,245 worth of sales for Mary's Pizza Shack that night. Mary's will be sending PV a check for $650! All because of our wonderful PV Families!!! It was a wonderful community event and it was so nice to see our PV Families be able to come together and have some fun! Great Job!!! Thank you so much!
Where and when is the next one, you wonder? Well, wonder no more. Next month we are off to the grill - California Grill that is! (There is a flyer attached with more information!) Mark your calendars (although, I won't let you forget - I will be reminding you frequently!)
Don't miss out on the Library Book Club!
On January 30, the PV Library Book Club party will be held in the school library. During the party, book club members will select a new hardcover book to be donated to our school library. Each book will be personalized with a dedication on the inside cover. After the children select their book, they will get a treat, a pencil and a personalized bookmark. Visit the PV library to see all of the wonderful books donated by generous parents during previous Library Book Clubs. Library Book Club books can be identified by gold seals on spine of the book. If you didn't turn in your Library Book Club membership form in September, it's not too late! Please contact Carole Williams at, willc@ils.unc.edu or phone 897-2287, if you'd like a membership. The cost is $20. You can dedicate a book to a cherished friend, teacher, or family member, commemorate a special event, or get a membership for yourself! Your book will be valued by Pleasant Valley children for years to come.

School Fuel's Annual Campaign Kicks Off October 26th

Our annual campaign will kick into high gear on October 26. Wear School Fuel yellow for a district-wide School Fuel Spirit Day. Then come to the Kickoff Party at the NSUD office at the corner of Seventh Street and Grant Avenue from 5pm to 7pm. Tours of the Haunted School Bus and School House will be free, and California Grill and Rotisserie will be selling food. Costumes are optional but encouraged!
Please also be sure to contribute to this year's fundraising campaign so that we can make progress toward our goals of continued and growing excellence in the Novato schools. School Fuel annually raises money to support enrichment programs in every school in Novato. Programs funded this year include music, art, and drama.
Matt & Jeff's Discount Cards
Now you can support School Fuel, and save yourself some money at the same time! Matt & Jeff's is offering FREE gas discount cards to families of all Novato students. REFLECTIONS
Parents, it is that time of year where students from all over have the opportunity to explore their creativity. I have been art docent for K-5th grades and I am constantly amazed at the interest level of all art forms by the students. We have a lot of really enthusiastic and talented kids at our school and they have the opportunity to participate in the PTA Reflections program.
A packet will be coming home soon in their Friday folders, but here are the basics:
Theme: I Can Make a Difference by...
Categories: Film/Video, Dance/Choreography, Musical Composition, Photography, Visual Art, Literature
Due Date: Thursday, November 29th, 2007, 8:15 a.m.-9 a.m.
We will display the art in the multi purpose room during the month of December during which time it will be judged by professionals in each category, to determine those projects which will proceed to the District Level. Everyone will receive a participation ribbon!
I can't wait to decorate Pleasant Valley with "I Can Make A Difference!" We all can make a difference and this is a great opportunity for discussion with your kids as to how they can help our world.

RED RIBBBON WEEK - October 22nd - October 26th
FROM THE DESK OF PAM CONKLIN
As many of you may have heard, tragedy has touched the Pleasant Valley community. One of our families has lost their father and their mother is in critical condition. We are being kept informed of her medical condition. Our hearts and prayers are extended to the children and family.
Please know that counseling services have been made available for staff and students as support through this difficult time. In such times, our community must unite in support of the children. Let us all be respectful of these circumstances and keep in mind the well-being of our children.
We are fortunate to live in a community that embraces one another. Please focus on the kinship that we share and not on the tragedy itself. Let us use this terrible incident to remind all of us how precious life is. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to stop by the office or to call. This is a difficult time for us all.
FROM THE PTA PRESIDENT
Dear Parents, Teachers and PV Community,
Are private schools superior to public schools? An article entitled, "Parents Play a Big Role in Academic Success" (referenced on the National PTA website - www.pta.org) challenges this presumption. The author says that parent involvement in day-to-day schoolwork and parental expectations are bigger factors than the type of school.
That's such a huge statement it bears repeating: parent involvement in day-to-day schoolwork and parental expectations are bigger factors in our children's academic success than the type of school (private v. public). It thrills me as a parent and as a member of PTA that the Pleasant Valley School Community already gets this.
Our next PTA meeting is this Monday, October 22, at 3:30 p.m. in the school library. The meeting agenda is posted on the board outside of the school's main office. Last meeting we had PV students from Cub Scout Pack 85 lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. This Monday we're honored to have PV students from Girl Scout Troop 326 present a flag ceremony. PTA meetings are open to everyone and we encourage all to attend.
Please continue to Write the President at tdavidson@pves.info, to share your ideas, questions, and concerns with the PTA. If you haven't already joined the PTA, pick up an application and join today. You can make PTA a better association.
Tim Davidson, President

PV NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS:
But it's just a cupcake.....
Birthday parties and holiday celebrations at school provide a unique opportunity to help make healthy eating fun and exciting for children. Schools can take advantage of classroom celebrations to serve food that tastes good, is nutritious and provides students with an opportunity for nutrition education experiences.
Typically, foods for school celebrations include cupcakes, candy, cookies and juice boxes. So what's the harm? There is nothing wrong with an occasional treat, but unhealthy choices have become the norm rather than the exception. Parties, treats used as classroom rewards, food fundraisers, vending machines, snacks and school stores constantly expose children to high-fat, high-sugar, low-nutrient choices.
Overall, our children's eating habits are poor. Only two percent of children meet all Food Pyramid recommendations. Most children do not eat enough fruits, vegetables or whole grains. Obesity rates among children are on the rise, with serious health consequences. Constant exposure to low-nutrient foods makes it difficult for children to learn how to make healthy food choices. By providing students with nutritious choices whenever food is available (including the classroom), schools can positively influence children's eating habits.
Benefits of healthy celebrations:
- Healthy Kids Learn Better
- Provides Consistent Messages
- Promotes a Healthy School Environment
- Creates Excitement About Nutrition
- Protects Children with Food Allergies
Taken from "What Schools Can Do", Connecticut Nutrition Resource Library, Connecticut State Department of Education, Bureau of Health & Nutrition Services and Child/Family/School Partnerships. For healthy snack resources, go to ct.gov
